CVCHS renewal decision coming before year’s end
CONCORD, CA (Oct. 16, 2019) — Clayton Valley Charter High school is seeking its second charter renewal with its public hearing this Wednesday and a vote by the Contra Costa County Office of Education board on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
On Oct. 3, the students in Clayton Valley Charter’s student government submitted the school’s charter renewal petition to the CCCOE with student body president Melvin Brown III and other members of the school’s Associated Student Body leadership class handing over the 150-page document plus an appendix of over 1000 pages to county staff member Danielle Low in the CVCHS library.

The petition was officially accepted by CCCOE that same day, verifying it is a complete petition and beginning a renewal timeline set in state law. This Wednesday’s public hearing is at Pleasant Hill Middle School.
The CVCHS petition can also be found on the school’s website claytonvalley.org. Information on the process is also on the CCCOE website cccoe.k12.ca.us.

The fallout from the contentious tenure of the school’s original executive director Dave Linzey is most likely the major sticking point in securing the renewal. The school has been proactively seeking support for the renewal this year from its parents, alumni and community leaders. The Clayton City Council last month voted 5-0 for a resolution in support of the charter renewal for Clayton Valley Charter.
The school was granted a charter in January 2012 and opened that August with a three-year charter authorization through 2014-15. CVCHS then was approved for a five-year renewal in Nov. 2014 and is now seeking another five-year renewal for 2020-2024.
Ygnacio Valley High Innovation Lab
Ygnacio Valley High dedicated its Innovation Lab on the Concord campus last month with a potluck dinner and presentation spotlighting business and community supporters, students and faculty from the school who have made it possible.
This is the third year of the Project 212 YVHS Robotics program on campus and the person given much of the credit for its success is engineering teacher Joseph Alvarico (right). The lab now serves as the hub of STEM education at YV. Students, from left, Daniel Alejandre (11th grade), Yaritza Rios (10th grade) and Sam Hannon (12th grade).
