Peyton Omania wins bronze at Jr. World Greco Roman Wrestling Championships
In 2018 Peyton Omania made history as the first De La Salle High School wrestler to win a CIF State Championship before heading off to Michigan State.
Last month, he went a step further by winning the bronze medal at the Greco-Roman Junior World Championships in Estonia. That success has prompted the Concord wrestler to take an Olympic redshirt from the Spartans program to train for a chance to make the USA team at the Tokyo Olympics next summer.
In Estonia, Omania scored four impressive wins before falling to European Junior champion Giorgi Shotadze of Georgia in the semi-finals. He rebounded to knock off Xin Huang of China 6-5 to bring home the bronze medal for Team USA.
“Peyton is a world class wrestler and this is validation that he is among the best in the world,” said MSU wrestling head coach Roger Chandler. “Coming home with his first medal in three tries shows his development is continuing. I’m proud to be part of his journey and to see his commitment and hard work pay off.”
