Contra Costa Women’s March 2020
Hundreds gathered in Walnut Creek for the 4th annual Women’s March. Just as in gatherings all over the country, women (and men and children) showed up to march, protest and speak about issues like reproductive rights, gun violence, climate change, and racial and economic injustice.
The Women’s Marches started after the election of Donald Trump and have been held each year. Speakers at this year’s Contra Costa march included California congressman Mark DeSaulnier; Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America; California Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan; Antioch City Councilmember Monica Wilson; and Lauren Babb, Public Affairs Director for Planned Parenthood. Several young women from Contra Costa also spoke about their experiences with racism in local schools and about the importance of young people voting in the next election.
Volunteers moved through the crowd to register voters. Many speakers encouraged the crowd to make their own voices heard by voting. As several of the speakers noted, “voting is your superpower.”
