Concord seeks paid youth ambassadors amid 27% rise in COVID-19 cases
Last week the City of Concord, CA, reported that there were 700 known positive cases of COVID-19. According to County data, that number stands at 890 – a 27% increase in one week. This week also saw the deadliest day for California, which set a new record for daily deaths from COVID on Tuesday with 164 deaths statewide.
State and County officials continue to warn residents about the importance of practicing social distancing, wearing face coverings and using good hygiene.
On July 28, the County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an ordinance that allows city and county officials to cite people who don’t wear masks, fail to keep a distance of at least six feet, gather in large groups or commit other violations, as well as businesses that ignore rules.
Over the last week, County health officials have also released new resources for the community, including a tip sheet on how to “slow the spread” of the virus, and a risk assessment infographic that indicates safer choices versus riskier choices when it comes to putting yourself at risk for contracting COVID.

To help local residents better understand what kind of businesses and activities are currently allowed to operate, Contra Costa Health Services released an updated “Openings at a Glance” document on July 21.
Applicants Sought for Youth Ambassadors Program
Youth and young adults are powerful agents for change and transformation in their communities. In an effort to help reduce the spread of the virus, the COVID-19 Youth/Young Adult Ambassadors program has been established in Contra Costa County.
The primary role of the Ambassadors is to help create youth/young adult-focused messages about COVID-19, such as how to protect yourself from the virus, as well as how and where you can get tested for it. Once these messages are created, the Ambassadors will be asked to use their social media platforms to share these messages with family, friends, and social media platform followers.
Youth and young adults ages of 15-24 who are passionate about educating others about health and/or social justice issues and are committed to raising awareness about the importance of protecting each other from COVID are invited to partner with the County in developing messages that will be core to this campaign.
Interested participants are encouraged to apply to be a part of this group. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, August 3. The campaign will run through December 2020, and participants will receive a $525 stipend. To learn more, click here.
