With Pioneer gone, let’s keep honoring the stories of our seniors

CONCORD, CA (Aug. 31, 2025) — As The Pioneer publishes its final issue this month, I want to take a moment to reflect, express gratitude, and recognize the vital role this paper has played in connecting and informing our community for so many years.

In a world that’s rapidly gone digital, The Pioneer remained something rare – a printed voice for the people. Its stories, announcements and profiles helped weave together the fabric of Concord, Clayton and Pleasant Hill.

For local businesses like mine, it’s been a bridge to the community. For families, it’s been a trusted resource. And for seniors, it’s been a reminder that they matter – that their stories, struggles and celebrations still have a place on the page.

Over the past year, I’ve had the honor of contributing monthly editorials on topics close to my heart: keeping safe in the summer heat, how to stay independent, the senior scam epidemic, the reality of family caregiving, hidden dangers in your home that may put you at risk and proactive care decisions. I wrote these columns with one goal in mind: to empower families with knowledge and compassion, no matter where they are on their care journey.

As this final issue goes to print, I’d like to leave you with one lasting message. Our seniors are the keepers of wisdom, experience and resilience. Their stories deserve to be heard, protected and honored.

Whether it’s helping someone age in place safely, supporting a caregiver overwhelmed with responsibility, or simply sitting and listening to a senior’s memories, these small acts make a difference. As the pages of The Pioneer come to a close, let’s commit to continuing that legacy of care and connection in our own lives.

To The Pioneer team: Thank you for your years of service and storytelling. And to the readers: It’s been a privilege to speak with you through these pages. Our work at Home Helpers will continue, and I remain here as a resource for anyone navigating aging or caregiving challenges.

Let’s keep sharing the stories that matter, even if they no longer arrive in our local paper. Though the paper may be retiring, the heart of this community carries on.
