CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (May 13, 2025) — On a mission to lose weight and lower her cholesterol, Pioneer food columnist Cindy Gershen invites readers to join her healthy eating plan.

“In short, I’m doing everything I can to change my diet so my numbers go down. I will be sharing what I’ll be eating and how my numbers come down (I hope) through dietary changes, without drugs,” she writes.

On the menu today is braised cabbage with a spicy turkey burger.

Understanding DEI: The community is invited to a webinar about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) – and why it’s being dismantled on a federal level – at 4 p.m. May 15. Panelists will be county Supervisor Shanelle Scales Preston; Michael Urbina, executive recruiter for DEI at Pure Storage; and Peter Kim, co-director of Racial Equity and Social Justice for the county.

Mixing it up at the Chamber: High school and college students are joining members of the Concord Chamber of Commerce at First Friday mixers, and president Kevin Cabral is enjoying the new energy. “These bright, goal-oriented young individuals are the future of our community,” he notes.
