So This Happened…Week of March 31-April 6, 2025

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Apr. 6, 2025) — Residents lined the streets in downtown Pleasant Hill on April 5 as part of the national “Hands Off” protest against the policies of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
“Every direction we turn, education equity, healthcare for all, economic justice, there’s more work to be done to engage the people and support our local government to hold the line,” said Roxanne Carrillo Garza, senior director of Healthy Contra Costa.
Meanwhile, Pioneer columnist Nathalie Montijo examines the “worldwide and potentially catastrophic” effects of the administration’s cuts to USAID. In regard to public health, Dr. Robert Steinbrook noted: “Abandoning ongoing clinical trials for reasons that are not scientifically sound is an egregious violation of clinical research ethics and defies common sense.”
Closer to home, the Central Contra Costa Family Justice Center (FJC) remains focused on helping victims of domestic violence get legal, emotional, housing and other support. “I used to work in a city bigger than Concord, and it was so difficult to get victims the help they needed,” said Concord Police Chief Mark Bustillo. “Now, all officers in Concord are trained to tell domestic violence victims about the FJC.”
