CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Aug. 8, 2021) — The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will hold a virtual hearing on Tuesday, Aug. 10, to begin the process of redrawing supervisorial districts. The remapping will depend on the results of the U.S. Census that will be released Sept. 30.
“The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors is committed to a robust redistricting and public outreach process with public hearings, public workshops, and a website with resources, including online mapping tools,” said board Chair Diane Burgis. Read full story.
COVID updates: To help counter the Delta variant, eight Bay Area health officers – including Contra Costa’s – issued orders requiring masks indoors in public places. “We must act now to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our community,” said Dr. Chris Farnitano. The new order, which also applies to performers at indoor venues, has caused local theater productions to scramble to adjust. Some will mask performers, some plan to move productions outdoors and others must decide whether the show can go on as planned under this restriction. Meanwhile, Kaiser Permanente announced it will make COVID-19 vaccines mandatory for all employees and physicians.
Coordinating homeless services: On Tuesday, Aug. 10, the Concord City Council will consider a proposal to hire a community resource coordinator to manage efforts to help the homeless. The recommendation came from the city’s Housing & Economic Development Committee. Chair Edi Birsan also said it’s essential to gather more specific information about the city’s homeless population. Bev Britton graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota and moved to the Bay Area with her soon-to-be husband Jim in 1986. She was features editor at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek before becoming managing editor of the Contra Costa Sun in Lafayette in 1995. She retired from newsrooms in 2001, but an ad for the Clayton Pioneer drew her back in. The family moved to Lake Wildwood in the Gold Country a few years ago - but working at the Pioneer keeps her in touch with her old neighborhoods in Concord and Clayton.
