Letter to the Editor Decrying Clayton’s response to grand jury report

CLAYTON, CA (July 22, 2025) — On June 24, the Clayton City Council rejected 10 of 13 findings in the Civil Grand Jury report, “Clayton: Small City, Big Concerns.” The city’s response, primarily authored by Councilmember Jeff Wan, was defensive and dismissive in tone. Despite calls for a more respectful and constructive reply, the council approved the draft without modification.

Wan, Mayor Kim Trupiano and Councilmember Jim Diaz acknowledged being interviewed by the Grand Jury three times each. Yet all three criticized the report for omitting their input. After nine months of investigation, including interviews, transcript reviews and expert consultation, isn’t it more likely the Grand Jury simply found stronger evidence elsewhere?

Wan claims the report fits a “pre-chosen narrative,” but that implies a conspiracy among impartial citizens with no ties to Clayton. This is the narrative of the council majority, and the PAC masquerading as a “trusted news source.” At least the Pioneer puts names on every article rather than hiding behind the “anonymous” posts of keyboard warriors.

Occam’s Razor suggests the simpler truth: The Grand Jury got it right. They reveal serious concerns that Clayton residents should not ignore.
