CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (May 16, 2021) — Contra Costa County Fire Protection District announced that Crew 12 has finished their 2 week “preseason” training this week. The crew officially becomes active Sunday, May 16.

Some of the completed classes include:

  • Line construction
  • Heat and injury prevention
  • Fire line safety
  • Fire weather
  • Pumps and saw operations
  • Aviation and dozer safety

This year, the program grows from one crew to two. Crews have the capability to construct hand lines to fight active fire and cut fuel breaks to prevent the spread of fire. Their mobility gives them the ability to suppress fire in areas inaccessible by fire engines. The handcrew is a force multiplier and is able to get engine companies back in service by supplying them with replacement hose.

Crew 12-1 and 12-2 allows coverage 7 days a week this year on 12 hour day shifts protecting and serving the citizens of Contra Costa County.
