CONTRA COSTA COUNTY—The Tobacco Prevention Program is looking for interns.

The Tobacco Prevention Program is Contra Costa Health Services Department of Public Health’s leading policy program for tobacco control. Over the past 35 years, TPP has uplifted community voices at city council meetings and has achieved multiple policy victories that have protected and advanced health equity for all Contra Costa County residents.

Today, TPP focuses on Tobacco Retailer Licensing and Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing policies.

Job Title: Media Intern

Media Intern Reports to: Sr. Health Education Specialist

Time: 20 hours a week

Prepared Date: 1/6/2021

Media Intern position: March 2021-August 2021

Stipend: $15/hour

Position Description Summary

The Media Intern will advance the Tobacco Prevention Program’s mission to advance and protect Communities of Color’s Health in Contra Costa County by sharing relevant, timely and accurate tobacco prevention information on the TPP webpage and through Facebook & Instagram. Being apart of Contra Costa Health Services the media intern will also abide by the mission to care for and improve the health of all people in Contra Costa County with special attention to those who are most vulnerable to health problems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Co-create, design and develop social media marketing materials to educate different audiences about youth vaping, flavored tobacco products, secondhand smoke, positive affirmations and local policies
  • Assist in developing asocial media editorial calendar
  • Help prepare materials and agendas for the Tobacco Prevention Coalition’s Communications Subcommittee
  • Assist in tobacco prevention webpage management
  • Review media content to ensure that it is appropriate before publishing on social media platforms
  • Develop simple marketing materials based on accurate tobacco facts and statistics

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Elevate program to TPP stakeholders, including community and general public
  • Participate in related TPP coalition calls and meetings
  • Participate in community events and meetings as necessary
  • Assist with paid media advertising buys
  • Support Covid-19 social media influencer program as needed
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Description Summary

The Policy Intern will work to advance the Tobacco Prevention Program’s mission to advance and protect Communities of Color’s Health in Contra Costa County.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the drafting legislative letters of support/opposition
  • Conduct research and monitor tobacco control policy issues in Bay Area/California.
  • Support the development of webinars and town halls, as applicable.
  • Provide administrative support, including community outreach, and scheduling events.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Elevate program to TPP stakeholders, including community and general public
  • Participate in related TPP coalition calls and meetings
  • Participate in community events and meetings as necessary
  • Other duties as requested

Education and/or Experience

  • A current student or recent graduate (16 years or older)
  • Students in High School, Vocational, Undergraduate, Masters programs are welcome

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Team oriented
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain relationships across diverse demographic groups
  • Strong understanding of Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity
  • Highly motivated and self-sufficient
  • Desire to learn about tobacco, lung related diseases, and health policy

  • Sitting, walking, and listening for up to 2-5 hours per day
  • Computer keyboarding an average of 2-4 hours per day

Position Description Summary

The Program Intern will work to advance the Tobacco Prevention Program’s mission to advance and protect Communities of Color’s Health in Contra Costa County.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning and facilitating County task force meetings
  • Work with TPP staff to provide assistance to youth and young adult task force members
  • Develop, plan, training sand workshops with TPP Staff
  • Co-create brand logos, gear, and task force brand
  • Assist with logistics for the Coalition meetings (slides, minutes, newsletter, other tasks as assigned related to meeting preparation)
  • Co-create and update Coalition Newsletter quarterly
  • Assist with development of tobacco retailer education and compliance packets

  • Assist with Secondhand Smoke Complaint line
