Concord celebrates community and safety on National Night Out

National Night Out is an annual program which brings law enforcement and residents together in neighborhood gatherings. The community-building event promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make residential areas safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out began in 1984 with neighbors simply turning on their porch lights and sitting in front of their homes. It has grown over the years from 2.5 million people to an estimated 38 million across the country.

Residents and police officers gathered at a dozen or so parties around Concord on Tuesday night to meet each other and take part in fun activities such as a cake walk and a bike rodeo. The free event was open to all residents.

The Pioneer was able to attend 2 of the Concord events. The first took place at the Concord Library. Another was held in the Canterbury Village neighborhood. (Photos by Tamara Steiner)
