Cardenas Market opens new store on Monument Blvd.

Cardenas Market opening on Monumnet Blvd.Cardenas Markets celebrated the opening of its 58th store (its fourth in California) on Monument Boulevard in Concord this week with a mariachi band and ribbon cutting. The store replaces the Safeway at 2250 Monument, which closed in 2013. The enormous facility fills 42,000 square feet and represents the chain’s “Next Generation” concept, bringing a more contemporary shopping experience than its older markets. The Monument store will also focus on plant-based healthy eating.

Concord councilmember Edi Birsan said he expects Cardenas to be a big boost for the Monument area, “dragging all those people from Walnut Creek and Martinez and turning them loose to shop in the Monument.”

The new store hopes to draw customers from all demographics with good music and friendly customer service. It offers a wide variety of foods, from national brands to authentic Latin American items.

The original Cardenas Market opened in Ontario, Canada, in 1981. Jesus Cardenas left Jalisco, Mexico, as a teenager and emigrated to the U.S., where he worked at local farms and owned a hog farm in the 1970s.

To celebrate the opening of the new store, Cardenas has donated $15,000 to the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano and $5,000 each to Mt. Diablo High School, Ygnacio High School and Concord High School for scholarships.

The Cardenas team is currently 100 strong and the store is still hiring.
