As Contra Costa heats up, what’s allowed under COVID-19 health orders?

Activity in Contra Costa County seems to be increasing, after the Memorial Day weekend, which saw large crowds at our parks and beaches. Months of shelter-in-place have made many people anxious to get out of the house. A May 18 order from county health officer Dr. Chris Farnitano relaxed some of the previous restrictions on businesses. East Bay parks have also had recent rule changes

With things changing from week to week and from county to county, it’s hard to know what’s OK and what’s not. The May 18 order allows some retail stores to open for curbside sales and outdoor pickup. However, stores may not display merchandise for sale outside the store. Social distancing and reasonable disinfecting measures are also required.

‘One step in the right direction’

“While this is not a return to normal,” said Dr. Farnitano, “it is one step in the right direction. We will be closely monitoring the effects of allowing curbside retail on the spread of COVID-19 in the community.”

Businesses that manufacture retail goods and provide warehousing or logistical support to retail stores may now reopen. But there are limitations. These businesses must limit the number of staff in enclosed areas and enforce social distancing.

Don’t forget that residents must still remain at home as much as possible. Face coverings are required when you leave home.

Contra Costa has made progress in controlling the spread of COVID-19. We must continue to take the precautions that help flatten the curve, such as regular handwashing and social distancing as more activities resume.
