About the Pioneer

On May 9, 2003, we published our first issue of the Clayton Pioneer covering Contra Costa’s smallest city.

In the intervening years, we expanded our reach to cover Concord, the county’s largest city – starting with the publication of  The Concordian in 2008 (which we sold to our partner in 2010) and continuing with the Concord Pioneer in 2014.

In January 2019, we combined the two papers into one large monthly covering both cities and reaching more some 38,500 households and businesses in Clayton and Concord.

The Pioneer is a true community newspaper with local writers, advertisers and long-time local publishers.

We’ve lived in either Clayton or Concord since 1955. Our six children all attended local schools. Here is where we hike the hills, drive the roads, shop in the stores, eat in the restaurants and go to church. And, here is where we work.

Our offices are located at 6160 Center Street, Suite F, Clayton, CA 94517.

The Pioneer is published monthly and delivered by mail to 5000 residents in Clayton and by carrier to 32,500 homes and businesses in 94518, 94519, 94520 and 94521.

We cover the local news (most of it, anyway). We tell you what happened on the streets, in the schools, at City Hall, in local sports and on local stages.

We bring you features and columns on schools, hiking, nature, weather, gardening, technology, real estate, investing, health, movies, pets and relationships, and stories about interesting people.
